Introduction

Hamirpur district is situated between 76°18′ and 76°44′ East longitude and 31°25′ and 31°52′ North latitudeTotal Geographical Area of this District 1,118 Sq. Km (2.01% of the total area of Himachal Pradesh). It is the smallest district in terms of area. The district lies in the Shivalik Range, also called "Mainak Parvat". District Hamirpur is known as the Education Hub of Himachal Pradesh. HISTORY (EXAM POINT OF VIEW)

History of District Hamirpur 
  • According to the Puranas and Panini's Ashtadhayayi, Hamirpur was a part of the old Jalandhar Trigarta empire.
  • Hamir Chand (a Katoch ruler) founded Hamirpur in 1700 A.D.
  • Sansar Chand II made Sujanpur-Tira his Capital, attacked Mandi, and made Raja Ishwari Sen a prisoner at Nadaun (Hamirpur) for 12 years.
  • Raja of Kahlur Mahan Chand, in alliance with the other hill rulers, invited Gorkha Ruler "Amar Singh Thapa" to counter Raja Sansar Chand.
  • A battle took place at "Mahal Moria" in Hamipur in 1805 between "Amar Singh Thapa and Raja Sansar Chand. In which Amar Singh Thapa got victorious.
  • Amar Singh Thapa reached Naudan and liberated "Raja Ishwari Sen", who was imprisoned by Raja Sansar Chand.
  • In 1809Ranjit Singh advanced towards Kangra and defeated the Gorkhas and pushed them to the east of the Satluj River.
  • On 24th August 1809, Kangra fort and 66 Villages in the Kangra valley came under the possession of Ranjit Singh.
  • Sikhs maintained sovereignty over Kangra and Hamirpur. However, the British defeated them in 1846.
  • In 1888, Palampur was made a tehsil by merging areas of the Hamirpur and Kangra.

History of Nadaun
  • The present-day Nadaun is in the Hamirpur district. It was a part of the Kangra princely state.
  • In 1823, Britisher given Jagir to Raja Jodhbir Singh, son of Sansar Chand II.
  • Raja Jodhbir Singh was the first Raja of Nadaun.
  • Bulleh Shah mentioned Nadaun as the city of the innocent. He also had written a saying about Nadaun, "Aaye Nadaun Jaaye Kaun". 
  • Bil-Kaleshwar Temple, founded by Pandavas, is at Nadaun.
  • Amtar Cricket Stadium, situated in  Hamirpur, is named after Atal Vihari Vajapayee.
  • Raja Chander Bhan Chand of Kangra gave poison to Raja Deep Chand of Bilaspur at Nadaun.

Boundaries and Their Separation
  • East: Seer Khad separated it from the Mandi district.
  • West: In the West lies Una.
  • North: The River Beas separates it from the Kangra district.
  • South: In the south lies Bilaspur.

Important Ranges in District Hamirpur
  • Jakh DharIt runs in the continuation of the Kalidhar Range in Kangra.
  • Chabutra Dhar: It has the same depth and strike as Jakh Dhar mentioned above, and continuation beyond the river Beas.
  • Sola Singh Dhar:  It is the Largest Range of the track, also known as "Chintpurni" and "Jaswan Dhar" in UNA, and "Sola Singi Dhar" in HAMIRPUR.

River System in Hamirpur 
  • River Beas: This river enters the district Hamirpur at a place "Balla" in the village Sachui, where Baakar Khad drains into the River Beas.
  • Main Tributary of the Beas River in Hamirpur : 
    • Baakar Khad
    • Kunah Khad
    • Hatali Khad
    • Pung Khad
    • Sunderan Khad (Sundran Khad)
    • Maan Khad
  • 'Sukar Khad' and 'Mundkhar Khad' drain into Seer Khad, which drains into the River Satluj.

Economy of District Hamirpur 
  • Sheep Breeding Farm is situated at "Tal" in the Hamirpur District.
  • Milk Chilling Plant is at "Jalari", it was set up in October 1978.
  • A Modern Vegetable Packhouse and a Cold Room at Nadaun.
  • Cattle Feed Plant of 16 Metric Tonnes per day Capacity situated at "Bhor" in Hamirpur District.
  • A Herbal Garden is established at Neri.
  • Silk Yarn Reeling unit is also set up in the District.

  • Hamirpur was formed on dated 01 September, 1972.

HISTORICAL PLACES

Historical Places in Hamirpur
  • Tira Sujanpur: It is situated on the left bank of the River Beas, and it was founded by "Raja Abhay Chand" in 1748. There is a Tomb of "Nawab Gulam Mohammad" of Rampur.
    • Gauri Shankar Temple: It was built in 1793 during the reign of Sansar Chand for the sacred memory of his mother, Murli Manohar.
    • Narbadeshwar Temple: It was built in 1823 by Prasani Devi w/o Raja Sansar Chand.
    • The Chaugan of Sujanpur is famous for "HOLI MELA". It is held in March.
    • The Famous Shani Dev Temple is located at Lambloo in Hamirpur.
  • Deot-Sidh: Here is a famous cave temple dedicated to "Baba Balak Nath", it considered an incarnation of "Lord Kartikeya". It is located in the Dhaulagiri Hills of Hamirpur. Women are not allowed to enter the cave here.
